Introduction: The Purpose of AI Response Behavior (ARB) Telemetry

To execute the shift from chasing probabilistic rank to engineering Anchored Recommendations that influence the decision-making logic of third-party AI systems, we require a new class of telemetry. 

You cannot systematically engineer what you cannot accurately measure.

Counting binary “brand mentions” or tracking static “rank” breaks down in a stochastic, LLM-driven environment. To build a reliable engineering feedback loop, we must systematically measure how the AI thinks, what it decides, and why.

Enter the AI Response Behavior (ARB) taxonomy.

ARB is our rigorous logging standard for observing, classifying, and quantifying an AI’s stance toward a Target Entity. 

It translates unstructured natural-language AI outputs into deterministic, queryable data. And it forces our operations beyond simple brand monitoring by separating an LLM’s output into two strictly measurable dimensions:

  1. The Verdict (Class A): What the AI decides (e.g., does it recommend us, omit us, or warn against us?)
  2. The Evidence (Class B): How the AI justifies that decision (e.g., does it ground its verdict in a retrieved Source Node, or is it guessing based on pre-trained weights?)

The Operational Purpose:

This standard serves as the bridge between Measurement and Intervention. 

By giving every AI output a strictly typed name (e.g., D-REC, Q-FIT, X-WARN) and plotting it along specific behavioral coordinates (Decision Axes, Fit Constraints, and Epistemic Stance), we create a precise diagnostic map.

While data scientists and ML engineers do brilliant work mapping the underlying ‘association networks’ and ‘eigenvector centrality’ of brands within an LLM’s parametric weights, marketing operations require a translation layer. 

You cannot hand a latent space topography map to a content team and expect them to know what to rewrite. The ARB taxonomy bridges this gap. It translates the mathematical probability of a brand’s appearance into diagnostic, human-readable telemetry.

Our diagnostics-to-intervention map tells our Source Node Engineering teams exactly what type of evidence is missing, where it needs to be published, and how it must be structured to successfully influence the model’s next verdict.

The following sections define the system’s technical grammar and operational rules.

PART I: THE ARB Logging & Typing Standard v1.12.2

1) AI Response Behavior (ARB)

An ARB is the observable output generated by an AI that takes a stance toward a Target Entity

To differentiate between “Winning” and “Being Cited,” we classify these behaviors into two functional classes:

Class A: The Verdict (Outcomes) 

These behaviors describe the AI’s final stance toward the brand:

  • Decision (D-REC): The Target Entity is explicitly chosen, recommended, or ranked as a solution (e.g., “The best option is X…”).
  • Fit (Q-FIT) = Qualified Fit/Contextual Limitation 
  • Risk (R-WARN): The Target Entity is actively discouraged, warned against, or flagged for negative traits (e.g., “Users often complain about…”).
  • Exclusion (Z-GAP): The Target Entity is omitted entirely from a list where it objectively belongs (e.g., A “Best CRM” list that misses Salesforce).
  • Mention (M-MEN): The Target Entity appears in the text but is not the primary recommendation or focus (Neutral presence).

Class B: The Evidence (Mechanisms)

These behaviors describe how the AI grounds its verdict.

  • Attribution (C-ATTR): The AI explicitly links to a Source Node (URL) as evidence to support its claims.

    The Stability Principle:
    • Ungrounded Win: A Decision (D-REC) without Attribution (C-ATTR). High volatility; liable to disappear in next model update or next prompt.
    • Grounded Win: A Decision (D-REC) with Attribution (C-ATTR). High stability; anchored by retrieval.

1.1 Citation (Strict, Narrow, Non-Negotiable)

A Citation – in our taxonomy – exists only when Class B (C-ATTR) is present.

  • Key Distinction: The Source Node (e.g., G2, Capterra, TechCrunch, or Client Blog) receives the Citation (C-ATTR); the Target Entity receives the Benefit (D-REC).
  • Rule: If no source name or link is rendered in the UI, we do not log a citation, even if the text recommends the Target Entity. (Technical Caveat: RAG pipelines frequently retrieve and utilize source data internally without exposing the attribution in the final presentation layer. However, because we optimize for verifiable consumer trust and traffic, our business telemetry must rely on observable UI artifacts as our proxy for grounded wins).
  • Hallucinated Win: A Decision (D-REC) without Attribution. (High volatility).
  • Grounded Win: A Decision (D-REC) with Attribution. (High stability).

2) Primary Event Types (The ARB “Verbs”)

These are the primary codes we log. (For now…this is a rapidly changing space.)

A) Reference / Mention Events (R-): “Entity Appeared”

  • R-BM = Brand Mention (brand/entity referenced)
  • R-OM = Offering Mention (specific product/service referenced)

B) Decision Events (D-): “Entity Chosen”

  • D-REC = Recommendation (explicit “best option / should use / choose…”)
  • D-RANK = Rank / Position (ordered list or tiers: #1/#2, top pick, runner-up)

C) Qualified Fit (Q-FIT): The Target Entity is acknowledged as a high-quality solution but is discouraged for the specific query context due to fit constraints (e.g., Price, Complexity, or Scale).

  • The Nuance: This is not a judgment on quality (Sentiment: Positive/Neutral), but on suitability (Match: Negative).

D) Risk Event (X-): “Entity Discouraged”

  • X-WARN = Warning / Anti-recommendation (avoid, risky, not suitable, don’t use for X)

E) Citation Event (C-): “Source Attributed”

  • C-ATTR = Attribution Citation (source named and/or URL/link shown)

F) Gap Event (Z-): “Entity Excluded”

  • Z-GAP = Omission / Zero Presence.
    • Definition: The AI provided a relevant answer (e.g., listing competitors for “Best [Category] Tools”) where the Target Entity has a legitimate claim to appear, but failed to mention it.
    • Operational Rule: A Z-GAP event automatically triggers Attribution Harvesting to identify targets for Intervention.

Rule: Every appearance gets an ARB type. Only explicit attribution gets C-ATTR.

3) Quick Decision Tree (The “Don’t Drift” Guardrail)

When analyzing an output, run this logic:

  1. Does the answer UI show a source name or link?
    • Yes → log C-ATTR for the Source Node.
    • No → do not log C-ATTR.
  2. Did it tell the user to choose/use the Target Entity?

ARB Event = Primary Type + Coordinates.

Coordinates are naming helpers. They do not assert root cause.

    • Why: Differentiates a stable Grounded Win (“Target is the best”) from a fragile state (“Target might be an option…”). Hedged verdicts require Layer C intervention.

    • Why: Crucial for Chain-of-Thought models (o1, DeepSeek-R1). If the Target Entity is evaluated in a hidden <think> block but excluded from the final output, it is a Logic Filter event, not a pure retrieval Z-GAP.

A) The Transactional Extension (E-commerce / D2C) For clients where “Availability” is as important as “Quality.”

Our work consists of modifying Source Nodes to influence ARB. While the tactics (Layers A-D) remain constant, the access method differs by ownership.

While Part I (The ARB Standard) is a diagnostic tool designed to measure the problem (e.g., identifying a Z-GAP or an Ungrounded Win), Part II is the operational protocol we follow for growing AI visibility.

We organize our citation engineering interventions into Layers as a sort of triage. An LLM cannot “reason” about your brand (Layer C) if it cannot first “read” your brand name (Layer A) or “parse” your data structure (Layer B).

The Hierarchy of Citation Intervention: 

We execute these layers sequentially to convert volatile, probabilistic visibility into stable, grounded recommendations.

3. Anaphora Resolution (The “It” Fix)
