What Our Co-Citation Tool Is:

Co-citation: When a single web page links to two or more related domains.

The co-citation tool organizes domains or URLs by the number of outbound links to sites relating to your content or website. The philosophy is: pages linking to three or four related sites are much more likely to add a link to our content than pages linking to just one related site. So why not go after those highly linking sites first?

The Co-Citation Tool allows for prioritization of outreach efforts.

The tool can be used for:

  • Competitive Analysis: for biz dev & home page link building
  • Content Promotion: finding topical authorities to build links to a high authority piece of content
  • PR Competitive Analysis: helping pinpoint the most important reporters for your vertical

WATCH Garrett’s tutorial below for an overview of how to use the Co-Citation tool:

Step 1: Compile a list of URLs related to the page, brand or content you’re promoting. We recommend using at least 5.

If you’re using the tool for biz dev or homepage linking, we recommend you compile a list of your top-ranked competitors. For content promotion, create a list list of urls of competing or related content. For PR competitive analysis, building a list of URLs that have mentioned or cited your competitors.

Step 2: Pull backlinks for your URLs using various sources. The tool works with back links pulled from Link Prospector, Majestic SEO and ahrefs.

Make a folder on your computer to contain various backlink reports. Then pull backlink reports for all your URLs using one or all of these backlink tools.

(Note: There are many instances where ahrefs has links that Majestic doesn’t have, where link prospector has links that ahrefs doesn’t find, and so on. So if you want to find the most and *best* opportunities, use information from all three.)

Step 3: Drop your folder of CSVs into the Co-citation Tool and select the minimum number of co-cited links you’d like to see per result.

For example, choosing “2” means you’ll only see results that link to at least 2 of your chosen URLs.

Step 4: As soon as you click “CoURLs” or “CoDomains,” the results are automatically copied into your clipboard. Open a spreadsheet, press ctrl-V, and you’ve got your list.

The URLs are organized by the number of co-cited URLs and domains, automatically prioritizing your outreach. And you know these sites are linking to quality resources because you used quality resources as your seed set.
